Why Does our Sweat Smell so Bad?

why does sweat smell Today we will go a bit off topic than normal, but I feel it is something that really needs to be covered on a fitness blog. What is that you ask? It is why does sweat smell so bad and do people smell their own sweat odors? My inspiration comes from a  muscle head that I was working out next to today at the gym, I kept glancing at him as he was throwing around some serious weights.He kept glancing at me through the mirror and I imagined that he thought that I was impressed or taking back by his beauty, but instead I was amazed that any person could smell so rank and still have a pulse.

Why Sweat Really Stinks?

Bromhidrosis (another word for body odor) happens at puberty because of increasing hormones called androgens. These hormones are not active until puberty, which is why body odor wasn’t a problem when you were a kid.

While sweat itself is virtually odorless, bacteria use it as a breeding ground and multiply rapidly. What you smell is the products related to bacteria breakdown of keratin protein on the surface of your skin. Sounds disgusting, doesn’t it? Chalk it up to an unpleasant fact of life!

When you work out or move around in the heat or sun, your body produces sweat. Sweating is the body’s way of regulating temperature. When sweat meets the bacteria on the surface of your skin, it produces an odor. That smell is what we call body odor (or B.O. for short).

Can we Smell our own sweat?

MHC peptides are found on the surface of almost all cells in the human body, helping inform the immune system that the cells are ours. Because a given combination of MHC peptides—called an MHC type—is unique to a person, they can help the body recognize invading pathogens and foreign cells. Over the past 2 decades, scientists have discovered that the molecules also foster communication between animals, including mice and fish. Stickleback fish, for example, choose mates with different MHC types than their own. Then, in 1995, researchers conducted the now famous "sweaty T-shirt study," which concluded that women prefer the smell of men who have different MHC genes than themselves. But no studies had shown a clear-cut physiological response to MHC proteins.

Conclusion to a long but much-needed rant on sweat odors

Ok, so now that I have given you the full skinny on why sweat smells so bad and how you can detect if you smell like road kill while working out. You must be wondering now what I can do to help this get better? Well, I know laundry expert or green cleaning guru but I did find a cool article on how to remove sweat odors from your clothes. I promise to not fall off track next week and actually right about something fitness related, or at least that is what my intentions are.

Now although I do not claim to be a total fitness expert I can handle my own around those self-proclaimed gurus. Often when I am at the gym throwing some weights around I get asked my opinion on "The Perfect Rep Scheme For Strength And Size" and although I do not have one true formula or answer for this question, I did my due diligence to research the answer from people who actually know what they are talking about. Read below to see if any of these tips can be incorporated into your fitness routine.

At my seminars and certification courses, I often get asked for the perfect rep set to build size and strength simultaneously. My answer: 1-2 exercises per body part, 7 sets of 3-5 reps, 30X0 tempo.

If lifting with tempo is new to you, the first number (3) is the eccentric motion or lowering of the weight. The second number (0) signifies a pause in the stretched position. If it's zero, there's no pause. The third number is the concentric tempo; an X there means to lift explosively. The fourth number (0) is the pause at the top of the movement, or in peak contraction (again, no pause in this case).

Those 8 reps you've been performing explosively on the way up and the way down simply don't have the same training effect as if you perform them with a couple of strategic pauses or counting along the way. This simple addition will dramatically boost both times under tension, and in most cases, the effectiveness of your training.
